My Kumu

by Leimomi

My kumu was a woman filled with aloha, she was my mentor, my inspiration…she nurtured the dancer in me from my first hula lesson as a keiki, to the place of honor as her alaka'i…..and all of the rest of the time in between was filled with laughter, fun and of course, love.

My kumu made me feel beautiful, special and important, in the way she smiled at me, watched me dance, or told me how much she loved and needed me.

My kumu was graceful, patient, kind, and beautiful! I loved her beautiful hula hands, her warm embrace that always left the fragrance of her perfume on my clothes, her smile. I cherish that she taught me to say "Hiki no", it can be done, instead of " I can’t ".

My kumu, Ginger, the "big lu'au" in the sky has it’s most honored guest, Me ke aloha, and until we meet again, A….lo…..ha!
